First trimester nausea. Why it happens and what your job is as dad when it happens.

Experiencing first trimester nausea alongside your partner can be overwhelming, but understanding the biology behind it helps foster empathy. The spike in hCG hormone causes nausea and heightened smell sensitivity, so common household scents and meals may suddenly become unbearable for her. One effective way to support her is by creating a comfortable environment—cook outside when the weather permits or open all windows to air out strong cooking smells. In my own journey supporting my partner, I learned the importance of switching to unscented deodorants and avoiding her usual perfumes or colognes that can trigger nausea. Keeping bland foods like plain crackers, toast, or simple fruits handy can help when she's feeling queasy. It's also crucial to not take her aversions personally—her reactions are from her altered body chemistry, not a reflection of her feelings toward you. Communication is key: ask her which smells she can tolerate and plan meals accordingly. Celebrate the small wins, like when she manages to eat a meal you prepared, and be patient during the tough days when even stepping in the kitchen is too much. Remember, this phase is temporary and supporting her with kindness and understanding will strengthen your bond during this important pregnancy journey.
