Dads, Don’t let everyone forget what your wife just went through.

As a first-time dad, I realized how easy it is to get swept up in the joy of a newborn and unintentionally overlook the incredible experience and challenges that your partner just went through. After the baby is born, everyone naturally focuses on the newborn—asking about weight, appearance, and health—which is important, but it's equally vital to remember your partner's physical and emotional state. Moms often deal with exhaustion, discomfort from stitches, and bleeding after delivery, yet no one checks on how they're doing. From my experience, making a conscious effort to check in on her in front of everyone can genuinely help her feel seen and valued. It might feel awkward initially to say, "Let’s give her a few minutes," or "How are you feeling?" in front of family and friends, but these small gestures make a big difference. Sitting next to your partner, rather than just by the baby, signals emotional support and reassures her that she’s not invisible during this intense moment. It’s important to remind others too—grandparents, relatives, friends—to direct some attention and care towards her wellbeing. Everyone’s excited about the baby, but the mom's recovery journey deserves just as much attention. If you didn’t expect this aspect of the postpartum experience, sharing this advice with your partner or other first-time dads can help create awareness. Making sure your partner feels comforted and supported during this critical time can strengthen your relationship and contribute to a more positive postpartum recovery for her. Remember, being an attentive and empathetic dad is about more than just celebrating the new arrival—it’s about honoring and appreciating the incredible journey your partner just completed.
