From my own experience as a first-time dad, it can be really confusing to tell what your partner is going through when she starts having contractions. Braxton Hicks contractions are often called "practice contractions," where the uterus tightens up to prepare for labor. They can feel intense and sometimes a bit painful, but the main difference I noticed was that these contractions tend to come and go without a set pattern and often ease up when my partner changed position or relaxed. Real labor contractions, on the other hand, are much more consistent. They get stronger, last longer, and come closer together over time. One thing that really helped me was timing the contractions—real labor usually follows a steady pattern and doesn't stop with simple movement or rest. If the contractions start to follow a rhythm and don’t let up, that’s usually when it’s time to get ready for the hospital. It’s also important to stay calm and supportive, as it’s easy to panic when these sensations first appear. Educating yourself ahead of time about these signs can make the process less stressful. Sharing this knowledge with other new dads is key because understanding what Braxton Hicks versus real labor contractions feel like can make all the difference in knowing how to help your partner.
