... Read moreParticipating in MerMay each year is such a creative journey, and I genuinely look forward to it! It’s incredible how a daily challenge can push your artistic boundaries and introduce you to new ideas. For example, today, on MerMay Day 18, I really wanted to create something truly unique with the mermaid’s tail, as it's often the most captivating part of their design. My inspiration for this particular mermaid's tail came from an unexpected place: a Peruvian lily! I was looking through some reference photos of lilies, admiring their vibrant yellow and dark purple patterns, and thought, "What if a mermaid's tail fin could mimic that intricate beauty?" It was a fun challenge to translate those delicate floral patterns into something more aquatic, giving the tail a dynamic and organic feel. I focused on making the purple tail flow gracefully, adding those distinctive Peruvian lily markings to make it truly stand out. Sometimes, looking outside the box for inspiration, away from typical fish or fantasy elements, yields the most striking results. When working on digital artwork like this, I pay close attention to the details. For this piece, crafting the pink-skinned mermaid’s form and her vibrant yellow top against the sandy rock environment took careful layering and color blending. Creating the illusion of light and shadow on the scales of her tail, especially with the yellow and dark purple patterns from the Peruvian lily, was particularly satisfying. I often use a mix of soft and hard brushes to achieve different textures – softer for the skin, and more defined for the scales and patterns. Don't be afraid to experiment with different brush settings to see what effects you can achieve! For anyone else diving into daily art challenges like MerMay, my biggest tip is to embrace the process and allow yourself to experiment. Not every piece will be a masterpiece, but every stroke teaches you something new. Sometimes, the most unexpected inspirations, like a flower from a completely different environment, can lead to your favorite creations. Seeing my mermaid sitting on a rock with sand below, her tail gleaming, really makes me appreciate the effort and joy put into each MerMay piece. Keep creating, keep exploring, and most importantly, have fun with your art!
