Last year when I got engaged I knew I wanted to have my wedding in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I got on the internet and tried to get in contact with venues to see if I could schedule a trip to take tours of the venues. I had a hard time getting responses back so, knowing mi gente I decided to just show up and walk in. And just as I expected each venue was happy to host tours for me.
El Convento, was at the top of my list of Must-See venues.
It’s a historic building constructed in 1651 (after the opening was delayed by Pirates 🏴☠️ ) as a monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Doña Ana served as the first mother superior. The ballroom space was originally a chapel where the Carmelite nuns used to pray. 🙏
Overall this is one of my favorite venues for it’s beautiful architecture and marble floors.
We didn’t end up picking this venue due to price.
💵 Price: $$$
👍Pros : beautiful historic venue, with hotel rooms on site, amazing photo op spaces, space for rehearsal dinner located on site
🤔Cons: No on site parking, on the high end for the budget conscious (me 😃) Viejo San Juan
I’m going to be sharing all the venues I toured this week if you’re interested in having a wedding in Puerto Rico , follow for more.

... Read morePlanning a wedding in Puerto Rico is truly an exciting adventure, especially when considering historic venues like El Convento. From my experience, one of the best things you can do is personally visit these venues rather than relying solely on online communication. Sometimes, responses are slow or incomplete, so showing up demonstrates your genuine interest and often leads to more personalized tours.
El Convento stands out not just for its stunning architecture and marble floors but also for the story that brings character to the space. Knowing it was originally a chapel where Carmelite nuns prayed adds a spiritual and historic depth that can resonate with couples wanting a venue with meaningful roots. Despite the higher price point, the hotel rooms on site make it convenient for guests and the onsite rehearsal dinner space makes logistics easier.
A key tip when planning your visit to El Convento or similar venues in Viejo San Juan is to inquire thoroughly about practical aspects like parking, which can be limited, and to consider transportation options ahead of time. This is especially important for guests who may not be familiar with the area.
Photographers will appreciate the variety of photogenic spots within El Convento, from the sunlit atrium to the grand ballroom. These spaces provide natural light and elegant backdrops that enhance wedding photos.
Finally, if budget constraints are a concern as they were for me, don't be discouraged. Puerto Rico offers a wide range of venues to explore, some with historic charm at more affordable prices. Following a series of venue tours and reviews can give you a clearer idea of what fits your vision and budget best. Stay tuned for more insights from various venues that I toured, as sharing these personal experiences aims to help couples make informed decisions for their special day in Puerto Rico.
