Old Salt
The whimsical realm of Dark Oak Forest isn't just woodlands. The forest dissolves into a dramatic flourish of rocky cliffs towering above the enchanting Cerulean Sea, so named for it's mesmerizing light blue color. Though acorns do not engage in far flung voyages across these relatively unknown waters, they do engage in lively trade with nearby kingdoms, exchanging tales and treasures. To help keep sailors safe from hidden reefs, several lighthouses were built to stand as sentinels, their beams slicing through foggy nights. It is a lonely job to keep the light burning and be on the lookout for those in need of help. Saul T. Bonefish, more commonly referred by the moniker "Old Salt", is a veteran lighthouse keeper. Each morning starts with a stale muffin softened in a cup of freshly brewed chicory tea then a scan of local coves for any sailors passing through. With 37 rescues, Old Salt takes quiet pride with his work over the years. The dangers of the sea may be hidden, but Old Salt's dedication shines like a beacon.
Author's Note: This image was taken last week at Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine. It was a steep scramble to get up on these rocks for the right angle so Old Salt looks like he is in front of the lighthouse. I photographed Old Salt in front of two other lighthouse and will be sharing those images over the coming weeks and months. In each scene, he is doing something a little different. For those who haven't seen the video of how I made this character, his hat and coat are made from gingko leaves. The buttons are yucca seeds, and the beard is wool. A big thanks to LisaKenneth Jones for sending me the yucca seeds and to Cindy Lodge for suggestion I give him bushy eyebrows. That little detail really helped him come alive!
