Photographing Eternal Flame Falls

Photographing the acorns at Eternal Flame Falls in Chestnut Ridge Park outside of Buffalo, NY. As a bonus, I got to meet David Rennemann, a follower who always comments and encourages me in my work. There were some challenges at this site. It was more wet than I was expecting. Was hoping to do more scenes with the acorn inside the grotto with the flame, but they were getting wet and were also so small compared to the flame. Things got much better when I set the acorns outside the falls. #acornwhimsy #whimsicalart #eternalflamefalls #waterfalls #natureartist @johnkucko

Read moreEternal Flame Falls in Chestnut Ridge Park is a rare natural phenomenon where a small but steady natural gas flame burns right behind a waterfall, creating a fascinating juxtaposition of fire and water. Photographers often find this spot inspiring yet challenging due to the constant moisture and the scale difference between the flame and small objects like acorns. When photographing at Eternal Flame Falls, it's helpful to plan for the wet environment. Water spray from the falls can quickly soak delicate items such as acorns, so placing them outside the immediate spray zone can preserve their texture and color. This tactic also allows you to experiment with different compositions, like aligning the acorns against the flame backdrop without losing detail. Capturing the whimsical charm of acorns at this site adds a storytelling element to landscape photography, blending natural objects with the vibrant energy of the eternal flame. Using macro or close-up lenses can highlight the contrast in size and texture between the flaming gas and the smooth acorns, enhancing visual interest. Photographers should also be prepared to adjust lighting and exposure settings because the bright flame can create high contrast scenes. Using manual mode to balance the exposure helps retain details in both the flame and surrounding water. Bringing waterproof gear is essential for camera safety in this moist environment. Beyond technical considerations, meeting fellow photography enthusiasts, like the encounter with an encouraging follower, reinforces the communal spirit found at such unique natural spots. Sharing experiences and techniques enriches everyone's artistic journey. Stay patient and experiment with different angles and object placements to fully capture the mysterious beauty and playful character of Eternal Flame Falls paired with the whimsical acorn arrangements. This blend of natural wonder and creative artistry makes for a memorable photographic experience.
