Choosing a room theme
You don't need to base the personality of your house around an aesthetic like "whimsigoth" or "cottagecore" or "dark academia" for it to look cohesive.
Try basing your theme around:
1.
a color palette. Pick one specific (more specific than "green," like an exact hue) color and make that your main accent. Buy decor ONLY if it matches that color for a while. Choose a secondary accent color. And choose a specific set of neutrals. Being very matchy-matchy with your color palette holds a lot of visual weight.
2.
an artist. Choose an artist who has a well-defined art style, because that way your room theme will look visually unified. Maybe pick two or three favorites if they mesh well together and decorate an entire room with their work. The visual flow becomes immaculate. Bonus points if they make more than just wall decor.
3.
textures or materials. Think about a room where all the furniture is made of wicker. That's going to look a lot different than a room where all the furniture is metal. Remember materials when you're choosing picture frames, tables, lamps, shelves, etc.
4.
a niche interest. Do you like board games? What if you made an epoxy table with game pieces + dice embedded in it? How about a framed collector Monopoly on the wall? Shelves stocked with games on display. Photos of you playing with the whole family hung up. A throw blanket that looks like the Twister game. Sculptures that look like chess pieces. You get the idea.
5.
a time period. Pick an era and region in history and use that as a theme. Renaissance Italy has a unique theme compared to America in the 1920's compared to Japan in the Edo Period.
