These are called dowel rods.
Before I got into tapestry making, I had no idea what these were or what uses they had. I don't even recall if I was aware they existed 😂
Now I use them constantly, measure + cut them, test types of wood for sturdiness, and know where to get them in bulk. And the caps, too.
A small section of my art studio is dedicated to dowel rods.
They're used for hanging the woven tapestry and placed in a tunnel which is sewn into the back of the tapestry.
You can also sew a tunnel on the bottom edge for rods which weigh the piece down and make it hang more straight. Typically that's for large pieces.
Metal ones exist too. I use wooden ones now, but someday I plan to offer adjustable length metal ones too. They're just fancier.
When you get a tapestry from me in person you'll likely get a rod. When you get one online you won't (because it costs more to ship it than the rod is worth).
