Tapestry care
the last one is really important 😇
The biggest reason why we do not put woven tapestries in the washer and dryer is that the shape is held largely in place by steam ironing, then face stitching. A face stitch helps keep it in place, but removing the work of the hot iron can take the rectangle shape out of your tapestry.
People also worry about their tapestry being hung on a wall that gets a lot of sun. I recommend against putting it in the direct sun, but I've also been hanging one in a sunny window for two years to test and it looks the same. However, in 10 years that could be different. And people live in one place for a long time.
They are super durable and last for centuries (not kidding) if they're taken care of well!!

When it comes to caring for your woven tapestry, one aspect that often gets overlooked is storage during off-seasons or when not on display. It’s best to roll your tapestry rather than fold it, as folding can leave permanent creases. Use acid-free tissue paper to avoid any damage or discoloration during storage. Additionally, handling your tapestry with clean hands or cotton gloves prevents dirt and oils from transferring to the fibers. If you notice any small spots or stains, spot cleaning with a gentle, dye-free detergent and cold water is safest. Avoid bleaching or harsh chemicals as they can break down the fibers over time. While sunlight can naturally fade colors, placing your tapestry away from direct afternoon sun can protect its vibrant hues longer. If natural light cannot be avoided, consider using UV-protective window films or rotating the tapestry occasionally to evenly distribute any exposure. Another useful tip is to occasionally check the tapestry’s tension and alignment on its hanging rod or frame. Over time, gravity can cause sagging, so re-ironing with steam and carefully re-stitching or tightening the face stitches can restore its original shape and crispness. Based on my personal experience, treating your tapestry with steady, gentle care and avoiding quick cleaning methods like machine washing will preserve its beauty and durability, making your woven artwork a treasured heirloom for generations.
