Cracking a hot wheels case

Maybe you want to perform a wheel swap, give it a custom paint job, or even repair a tiny broken piece. The good news is, you absolutely can open them up without resorting to a drill! I've experimented with a few methods over the years, and I'm excited to share my go-to, drill-free techniques. Method 1: The Gentle Pry (My Personal Favorite for Plastic Chassis) This is often the least destructive method, especially for newer Hot Wheels cars with plastic chassis. You'll need a very thin, sturdy tool – I usually reach for a small, flat-head jeweler's screwdriver or a plastic spudger (like those used for phone repairs). How I do it: Look closely at the underside of the car. You'll usually see small tabs or seams where the chassis connects to the body. Start by gently inserting your tool into a seam and applying slight pressure. Work your way around the car, prying a little at a time. It's like carefully peeling an orange – slow and steady wins the race. Listen for small clicks as the tabs release. Be patient! Prying too hard in one spot can snap the plastic. This method works well for many Hot Wheels cars, allowing you to reuse the chassis. Method 2: Heat It Up (For Stubborn Plastic Rivets) Sometimes, Hot Wheels cars have plastic rivets that hold the chassis firmly in place. If gentle prying isn't working, a little heat can be your friend. What I use: A soldering iron set to a low temperature or even a heat gun (used very carefully and from a distance!). My technique: Lightly touch the tip of the soldering iron to the top of a plastic rivet for just a second or two. The goal is to slightly melt and soften the mushroomed head of the rivet, not to burn through the car! Once softened, you can usually pry the chassis apart more easily. This takes practice, so maybe try it on a less valuable Hot Wheels car first. Remember, safety first – good ventilation and steady hands are key! Method 3: The Careful Grind (When Rivets are Metal and Stubborn) For older or more robust Mattel Hot Wheels cars that use metal rivets, or if the plastic rivets are just too strong, a drill is often the go-to. But since we're avoiding that, a tiny rotary tool (like a Dremel) with a grinding bit can work wonders. Important: This is *grinding*, not *drilling*! You're carefully wearing down the head of the rivet, not boring a hole through it. My approach: Secure the car firmly. Using a small grinding bit, gently and slowly grind away the mushroomed top of the metal rivet. You want to remove just enough material for the chassis to separate from the body. Take your time, apply light pressure, and let the tool do the work. Eye protection is absolutely non-negotiable here, as metal dust will fly! Putting Your Hot Wheels Back Together Once you've done your customization, you'll want to reassemble your Hot Wheels car. For plastic chassis, you can often just snap the tabs back into place. For cars where you've ground down rivets, you'll need a new fastening method. I usually use a tiny dab of super glue or, for a more permanent solution, very small screws (like those used in eyeglasses) with corresponding nuts. You might need to drill a tiny pilot hole for the screws, but this is for reassembly, not the initial opening! Opening Hot Wheels cars without a drill can be really satisfying.
