Last one solves everything

From my own experience supporting a partner with OCD, I've learned how crucial it is to be a calm and steady presence. When anxiety spikes and panic sets in, reacting with panic only intensifies the fear. Staying regulated yourself creates a safe space that helps them regain control. Honesty is another pillar of support. Even if the truth might trigger their anxiety, withholding information to ‘protect’ them often backfires, driving the what-if scenarios further into overdrive. My partner appreciates openness because it builds trust and reduces the unknown, which fuels OCD spirals. I also realized that giving constant reassurance is a trap. Though it feels natural to comfort, reassurance can create a dependency that prolongs the anxiety. Instead, encouraging them to face intrusive thoughts, letting them pass rather than erasing them, helps diminish their power over time. Practical tools, like journaling or apps designed for OCD management, have been game-changers. Reminding them gently to use these tools, especially during heightened anxiety, is far more effective than lengthy attempts to reason them down. Seeing their mood and nervous system cycles through data also promotes mutual understanding and empathy within the relationship. Taking the time to learn about OCD together has deepened our connection and made me more confident in how to support them. This journey is ongoing, and patience mixed with informed compassion truly makes a difference in navigating the challenges OCD brings to relationships.
