Hiking WA Section J on the PCT! 🥾🏕️

Eeeeeek! Me and my best friend Hiked all of the Washington PCT Section J! Hiking on the PCT had been a goal and dream of ours for a long time and we finally did it! We originally had planned to do all of the washington section but we decided we didn’t necessarily have the time in our schedule to be out on the trail for 6 weeks. Doing section J was our alternative and it was incredible! We hiked a total of 76.5 miles with total 16,360 elevation gain in our 7 days on the trail! Here’s how it went down! If you have any questions about this trip or how to do one similar I would love to help plan! #pct #backpacking #hikingadventures #pacificnorthwest #hiking

... Read moreThinking about tackling a section of the PCT in Washington? My 7-day adventure through Section J was truly unforgettable, and I'm so excited to share more practical insights to help you plan your own journey! Why Section J? And When to Go! We chose Section J because it offers an incredible taste of the PCT's Washington beauty without requiring a full six weeks on the trail. It's a challenging but rewarding segment. The best time to hike Section J typically runs from mid-July to early September. We went in late June/early July and encountered some snow, especially at higher elevations. While beautiful, this added an extra layer of challenge and careful navigation. If you're not comfortable with snow travel, aim for later in the summer when trails are generally clearer. Always check weather and trail conditions, especially for passes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest areas. Permits and Planning Your Days: While a long-distance PCT permit isn't usually required for section hikers unless you're doing a continuous trip, you will need permits for specific wilderness areas, especially if you're camping. Always confirm the latest regulations with the Forest Service. Planning your daily mileage is crucial. Our daily logs show distances ranging from 6.95 miles to 15.04 miles, with significant elevation gain each day ("Distance Elev Gain Time" is no joke!). Don't underestimate the climbs; those 2,000-3,000+ ft elevation gains can really slow you down. Build in buffer time for unexpected weather, fatigue, or simply to soak in the scenic views. What to Pack for a 7-Day PCT Section J Trip: For a 7-day trek like ours, packing smart is key. Here are some essentials I wouldn't hike without in the PNW: Shelter: A lightweight tent or tarp setup appropriate for potential rain and wind. Sleeping System: A warm sleeping bag (15-20°F rating is often good for shoulder seasons) and a comfortable sleeping pad. Nights can get chilly, even in summer. Navigation: GPS device (like a phone with Gaia GPS/AllTrails downloaded maps), physical map, and compass. Cell service is spotty. Water Filtration: A reliable filter or purification tablets. Water sources are generally plentiful but always know your next reliable fill-up point. Rain Gear: High-quality waterproof jacket and pants are non-negotiable in Washington. Warm Layers: Even if it's sunny, temperatures can drop rapidly. Pack a puffy jacket, fleece, and warm hat/gloves. First-Aid Kit: Comprehensive, including blister care! Food: Plan for 7 days of calorie-dense, lightweight food. We definitely enjoyed our 'two dinners' on challenging days! Bear Cannister/Bag: Required or highly recommended in some areas. Hiking Poles: A lifesaver for those steep ascents and descents, and especially helpful if you encounter snow or stream crossings. Embrace the Challenge, Savor the Beauty: PCT Section J is physically demanding, but the rewards are immense. Waking up to a PCT sunrise high in the mountains, seeing alpine glow, and pushing your limits with a best friend is an experience that stays with you forever. Be prepared for varied terrain, from lush forests to exposed ridges. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles, respect wildlife, and most importantly, enjoy every single step of your scenic Washington PCT adventure!
