1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 c softened butter
2/3 c lukewarm water
- mix together dry ingredients. add butter and water until shaggy dough forms. knead with hands until ball forms.
- cut into 4 large balls or 8 small balls. Let rest for 30 mins.
- roll each ball out into preferred size and cook on medium heat until each side bubbles and has brown spots. repeat for all tortillas & enjoy 😋

Wow, seeing so many of you interested in homemade flour tortillas with butter makes me so happy! After my own attempt, I realized there are a few extra tips I wish I’d known to make them even better. Let's dive deeper into those ingredients and some pro-tips for your next batch of homemade flour tortillas. First off, about the flour tortilla ingredients: While all-purpose flour works great, some people swear by a combination of all-purpose and bread flour for extra chewiness, or even specific tortilla flour for a softer texture. The most crucial part for me was understanding the role of the fat – in our case, butter! Using softened butter, as the recipe suggests, is key. It needs to be incorporated properly so it creates those flaky layers when cooked. Some traditional recipes use lard or shortening, which can give a different flavor and texture, but butter offers a delicious richness that I really enjoy. The baking powder isn't just for fluffiness; it helps create those signature bubbles you see when cooking, indicating a perfectly cooked tortilla. And that lukewarm water? It's essential for activating the gluten in the flour without overworking it, leading to a much more pliable dough. Now, for some tips to get that perfect shape and texture – something I'm still perfecting myself! Kneading: Don't skip the kneading! It develops the gluten, making the dough smooth and elastic. Aim for about 5-7 minutes until it's no longer sticky but still soft. If you find your dough is too stiff, add a tiny bit more water, a teaspoon at a time. Too sticky? A sprinkle of flour. Resting Time is Crucial: That 30-minute rest isn't just a suggestion; it's vital! It allows the gluten to relax, making the dough much easier to roll out thinly without springing back. I've found if I rush this step, my tortillas are much harder to roll and come out thicker. Rolling Technique: This is where I struggled with the shape! I learned that a light touch and consistent pressure are key. Start from the center and roll outwards, rotating the dough frequently. If it sticks, a little flour on your surface and rolling pin helps. Don't be afraid if they aren't perfect circles; rustic charm is part of homemade! Cooking the Tortillas: The medium heat is important. You want the pan hot enough to cook them quickly, but not so hot that they burn before cooking through. Look for those small bubbles to appear on the surface within 30 seconds to a minute. Flip it, and the other side should get light brown spots. Don't overcook them, or they'll become stiff. As soon as they're done, stack them in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft. The steam helps them stay pliable. Troubleshooting Common Issues: Tough Tortillas: Usually means too much flour, over-kneading, or not enough resting time. Not Bubbling: Pan might not be hot enough, or dough wasn't kneaded/rested properly. Sticky Dough: Add flour gradually until it's manageable. Finally, for storing your homemade flour tortillas: Once cooled, stack them with parchment paper between each one to prevent sticking, and store them in an airtight bag or container at room temperature for 2-3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week. They also freeze beautifully for up to 2-3 months! Just thaw and reheat gently in a dry pan or microwave. Making your own homemade flour tortillas is such a rewarding experience, especially when you can customize them. I hope these extra tips help you achieve your best tortillas yet! Happy cooking!
