Snow Shoeing

Have you ever looked at a pristine, snow-covered landscape and wished you could explore it off the beaten path? That's exactly where snowshoeing comes in, and it's quickly become one of my favorite winter activities! At its heart, snowshoeing is simply walking over deep snow using specialized footwear that distributes your weight, preventing you from sinking in. It’s an incredible way to experience the quiet beauty of winter, offering access to stunning areas that might otherwise be impassable. My own journey into snowshoeing started with a desire to stay active outdoors even when the snow piled up. I was amazed at how easily I could trek through areas with deep snow, feeling like I was floating on top of it. One of my most memorable trips took me past a charming tan yurt, heavily covered in snow, nestled amongst snow-laden pine trees. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, with wide, scenic views of a snow-covered valley and distant mountains under a clear, bright blue sky – moments you just can’t get on a plowed road! Getting started is surprisingly straightforward. The most crucial piece of gear, of course, is the snowshoes themselves. I absolutely love my purple and black snowshoes; they're sturdy and make me feel so stable on the snow. You'll also want snowshoe poles for balance, especially when traversing uneven terrain or going uphill. As for clothing, layering is key! I always make sure I'm in comfortable winter gear, complete with a warm red and white hat, protective sunglasses, and a face mask to shield against the cold and sun. Good waterproof boots are a must to keep your feet dry and warm. Finding a place to snowshoe is part of the adventure. Many national parks and local trail systems offer designated snowshoe trails, but you can also explore off-trail in suitable areas. I often look for forests of evergreen pine trees and open valleys with gentle slopes. On one particularly deep snow day, I even spotted a small green outhouse almost entirely buried, which was a clear sign of how much snow had fallen – a fun little landmark on the trail! For first-timers, a few tips can make all the difference. Start on flatter terrain to get used to the feel of the snowshoes. Your walk will be a bit wider than usual to prevent stepping on the frames. When going uphill, use the heel risers on your snowshoes if they have them; it makes climbing much easier. Downhill, a slight lean back and controlled steps work best. Always carry water, snacks, and know your route. The silence and natural beauty you encounter, like those panoramic views of vast snow-covered landscapes, are truly rewarding.
