So you want to start a business but feel like you have no idea where to begin? I’ve been there! When I started my first business, I had the passion but still had to learn so much along the way. Now, I run multiple businesses while pursuing my Master’s in Business, and I can tell you—you don’t need to have it all figured out to start! There is truly no better way to learn than from experience. Here’s how I built my brand (and how you can, too!):
1. Start With a Vision, Not Perfection ✨
What matters the most is that you love what you do in life. What are you passionate about? What inspires you? How can you profit from this idea while also solving a problem for others? My inspiration for my brand Solaia came from my love of fashion and self expression as well as, the lack of affordable and hypoallergenic jewelry & sustainable fashion. I didn’t wait until I had a perfect plan—I just started researching and taking action.
2. Learn As You Build 🧱
Even with a business degree, real-world experience is the best teacher. This current job market made job search very difficult for me after graduation. It wasn’t until I started running a business did I realize that school didn’t teach me HALF of what there is to know. I studied brands, experimented with manufacturers, and refined my vision through trial & error. Business school gave me the foundation, but starting Solaia taught me more than any textbook could.
You don’t need formal education to start, but you do need to be willing to learn. Take free online courses, watch YouTube, and research your industry daily.
3. Start Small & Test Your Ideas 🛍️
Whether you want to offer digital or physical products, remember that quality is more valuable than quantity. You can make or break your business by releasing a product that doesn’t meet the customer’s expectations. Before launching full collections, I started with small-batch jewelry to test quality and demand. I focused on waterproof, tarnish-free designs to make my brand stand out. Testing helped me refine my products before scaling up. Don’t overthink it! Start with one product or service, get feedback, and refine before going all in. You’ve got this!
4. Build a Brand That Stands Out ⭐️
Create an experience, not just a product. Your brand should feel intentional. Choose a name, aesthetic, and mission that reflect your ethics and values. The more passion you put into your work, the better you will do. Your website, profile or landing page for your business should draw attention. Ask yourself: What makes my business special compared to other businesses? Identify your unique edge. It could be your materials, your brand story, your customer experience, or even the way you market your products.
5. Show Up Online (Even If You’re Not Ready) 💻
I started sharing my business journey, even when I felt like I wasn’t an “expert” yet. Now, my brands have loyal customers who connect with my story. People don’t just buy products—they buy from people. Start posting about your journey, no matter where you are. Authenticity builds trust and attracts customers!
6. Stay Consistent, Even When It’s Hard 💪
Entrepreneurship is not always glamorous, but consistency is what makes or breaks a business. There were moments I doubted myself, but I reminded myself why I started.
Take small steps every day. Growth takes time, but if you stay consistent, you will see results!
