The “I’m about to get in trouble” energy with ADHD

Having ADHD sometimes feels like living in a constant state of “I’m about to get into trouble” energy. Even when nothing is wrong. Even when I haven’t done anything. It’s just this low-level buzz in my nervous system like something chaotic is loading in the background.

It’s the impulsive thoughts. The urge to say the joke. The need to touch the thing. Click the link. Start the side quest. Rearrange my entire life at 11:47 PM. My brain doesn’t like stillness — it likes movement, novelty, stimulation. So there’s always this tiny sense that something unpredictable could happen at any moment… usually because I’m the unpredictable thing.

And when I was younger? That energy actually did get me into trouble. Talking too much. Acting too fast. Reacting too big. So now as an adult, sometimes that feeling lingers — like I’m one impulsive decision away from chaos.

But it’s not just reckless energy. It’s creative energy. It’s spontaneous. It’s curious. It’s bold. The same “about to get into trouble” vibe is also the reason I try new things, say funny things, take risks, and make life interesting.

ADHD energy isn’t bad. It’s just intense. And sometimes it feels like my brain is always two seconds away from pressing the red button.

3/4 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with the constant sensation of "I'm about to get in trouble" energy can be both challenging and uniquely empowering for those with ADHD. This persistent buzz – a background hum of impending chaos – is something many of us experience daily. From my own journey, I’ve found that this energy is a double-edged sword. While it fuels a restless mind that craves movement and novelty, it also drives a creativity and spontaneity that enrich our lives. For instance, the need to start a side quest or suddenly reorganize your plans late at night isn’t just impulsivity; it’s a channel for breaking free from monotony and discovering new interests. I've learned to embrace these moments by creating outlets such as journaling spontaneous ideas or engaging in creative hobbies like drawing or writing, which harness this energy productively. Interestingly, this sensation doesn't just stem from unpredictable impulses but also from an intrinsic curiosity and courage to take risks that others might avoid. This mindset has led me to try new things that have expanded my horizons and helped me form unique connections with others who appreciate boldness. It's important to recognize that while this energy can occasionally lead to regretful decisions, understanding its roots in ADHD helps in developing strategies to manage it better. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation and scheduled creative bursts have helped me maintain balance, transforming "about to get into trouble" energy from a source of anxiety into one of passionate creativity. Finally, sharing experiences and strategies within supportive ADHD communities can further alleviate that low-level anxiety of impending chaos. We are not alone in this; acknowledging our intense energy as a part of our vibrant identity enables us to live more fully and fearlessly.
