Packing middle school lunches is basically my mom-superpower 💪🎒✨ Gotta keep it cool, fun, AND loaded with fuel to power her through the school day plus after-school program hours (because this girl is BUSY!). So yes… I overpack and I’m not sorry about it 😎🍴
Today’s lunch lineup:
🥪 Honey wheat sub stacked with garlic aioli + mustard + mayo blend, turkey + blazing buffalo chicken, mixed greens, chopped seasoned tomatoes, Colby Jack cheese, salt, pepper & oregano (aka sandwich goals 🤤).
🍇 A snack pack of juicy grapes + blueberries + granola crunch for a sweet pick-me-up.
🍓 Noosa honey yogurt with THREE scoops of cookie butter (yes, three) and Biscoff breadsticks for dipping perfection.
🧁 Fresh strawberry muffins for that mid-day treat.
🥔 Zapp’s chips for crunch time.
🍋 A refreshing Calypso Strawberry Lemonade water to keep her vibing all day.
Because she goes straight into her extended after-school program, I make sure she’s got plenty of extras so she never runs out of energy. Healthy, hearty, and a little fun — exactly what she needs to keep her brain sharp and her spirit lifted all day long! 💕
Who else loves packing lunches that fuel AND make your kid smile? 🙌

... Read moreOkay, fellow lunch-packing parents! That feeling of sending your 7th grader off with a lunch you know they'll actually eat – and that will fuel their busy day – is truly a mom-superpower, isn't it? Just like my daughter, many 7th graders are hitting that sweet spot of independence but still need us to ensure they’re well-fed. While my go-to is often a hearty sandwich and lots of snacks, I've learned a few tricks over the years to keep things fresh and exciting, especially when they're juggling school and after-school activities.
One of the biggest "7th grade lunch discoveries" I’ve made is that variety is key. They get bored quickly! So, while a delicious turkey and buffalo chicken sub is a winner, I also rotate through other options. Think about deconstructed meals: whole wheat crackers, cheese slices, and lean deli meat or hummus with veggie sticks. Pasta salads or leftover dinner (like chicken stir-fry or chili) in a thermos are also fantastic for a warm meal. And don't forget wraps – they can be quicker to assemble than a sub and just as satisfying.
Another game-changer has been focusing on balanced nutrition that truly powers them. For a growing 7th grader, protein is paramount for sustained energy, so I always try to include a good source, whether it's in their main dish, yogurt, or even a hard-boiled egg. Complex carbs like whole-grain bread or pasta are great, and of course, a rainbow of fruits and veggies. My daughter loves grapes and blueberries, but sometimes I’ll toss in some baby carrots, cucumber slices, or apple wedges with a little nut butter for dipping. The aim is to keep their brains sharp and their spirits lifted, as the original article mentions!
To make sure they actually eat it all, especially when they're in a rush or just being picky, presentation matters more than you’d think. This is where the bento box comes in handy! Seeing all the different components neatly separated, like the turkey and buffalo chicken in one compartment, fruit in another, and even a little space for those Zapp's chips or strawberry muffins, makes it much more appealing. It's like a mini treasure hunt! I also find that involving my daughter in the planning, even just asking her what fruits she’d prefer or if she wants yogurt or a different snack, makes her more likely to finish her lunch.
And for those busy bees who go straight to after-school programs, packing extra fuel is non-negotiable. I always add a 'second snack' – something substantial like a granola bar, a handful of nuts, or even an extra fruit. Staying hydrated is also crucial, so beyond the Calypso Strawberry Lemonade, I often include a refillable water bottle. These small additions ensure they never run out of energy and can focus on their activities without a rumbling tummy. Packing lunches doesn't have to be a chore; it can be a creative way to show our kids we care, ensuring they're well-equipped for whatever their action-packed 7th-grade day throws their way!
