Born to be a Mover, forced to be, well, more

I swear, sometimes it feels like I'm constantly trying to get through 'the trials of the witches road' just to survive another rehearsal! You know that feeling, right? We sign up for theatre because we love to perform, to embody characters, to tell stories. For many of us, that means we're naturally 'movers.' We love the physicality of acting, the stage combat, the character movement. But somewhere along the line, it often feels like being a 'mover' gets equated solely with being a high-energy dancer, and that's where the struggle begins. I've been in so many productions where the choreography becomes the absolute main event, even when the scene doesn't necessarily call for it. It's like choreographers feel this intense pressure to make everything a spectacle, and sometimes it just... isn't needed. I'm talking about those moments when you're just trying to convey a deep emotional scene, and suddenly you're being asked to execute complex eight-counts during a poignant monologue. It's draining, and honestly, it can detract from the storytelling. There's a fine line between dynamic staging and what feels like 'tyranny choreographers put actors through.' I've seen incredible actors, brilliant at their craft, completely overwhelmed by dance demands that don't serve the narrative. It makes you wonder, 'Not everything has to be dance heavy,' does it? Shouldn't there be a balance? We want to shine, to use our bodies to communicate, but not every single moment needs to be a full-blown dance number from a musical. Sometimes, the most powerful movement is subtle, a gesture, a shift in weight, a moment of stillness. It's a common sentiment amongst my fellow theatre kids: we love dance, we appreciate the art form, but we also yearn for roles and rehearsals that allow us to 'just exist' as multifaceted performers. We are actors, singers, storytellers, and yes, movers – but not necessarily always professional dancers. The pressure to constantly hit perfect pirouettes and grand jetés when the script is about a quiet internal struggle can be creatively stifling. I've learned to find humor in these situations, though. You have to, or you'd just cry into your jazz shoes! It's all part of the wild, wonderful, and sometimes utterly bewildering world of theatre life. But if I could whisper one thing to every choreographer out there, it would be this: trust your actors. Trust that we can convey emotion and story with precision, even without a triple turn. Sometimes, the most impactful movement is the one that comes from the heart of the character, not just the beat of the music. Let us move, let us act, and let's remember that not everything has to be a dance marathon. We're here to create magic, not just sweat through another intense routine.
