Okay, so many of you have been asking about my matcha recipe, especially after my last post! I'm so excited to finally share my step-by-step guide to making the perfect homemade matcha latte, complete with that irresistible cold foam. Trust me, once you master this, you'll be saving so much money skipping the cafe! First off, a good matcha latte starts with good quality matcha powder. Don't skimp here! I usually go for a ceremonial grade or a high-quality culinary grade for the best flavor and vibrant green color. The quality really makes a difference in achieving that smooth, earthy taste without any bitterness. Here’s what you’ll need: 1-2 teaspoons of ceremonial grade matcha powder (adjust to your taste) 2-3 ounces of hot water (not boiling, around 175°F or 80°C – this is key to prevent burning the matcha!) 6-8 ounces of your favorite milk (oat milk or almond milk are my go-tos for creaminess, but any milk works!) Sweetener of choice (maple syrup, honey, or agave are lovely and dissolve easily) Ice (optional, for iced lattes) For the Cold Foam: 1/4 cup milk (same as above, or a slightly thicker one like heavy cream if you're feeling fancy!) A touch of sweetener (optional, for a slightly sweet foam) Let's Make It! Prepare Your Matcha: Sift your matcha powder into a bowl to prevent clumps. This step is a game-changer and ensures a smooth drink! Add your hot water. Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small handheld frother, whisk vigorously in a 'W' or 'M' motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and a smooth, frothy layer forms on top. This usually takes about 30 seconds to a minute. No whisk? No problem! A small spoon and some elbow grease work too, just try to break up all the lumps against the side of the bowl. Sweeten It Up: If you like your latte sweet, now's the time to stir in your preferred sweetener with the whisked matcha. I find adding it now helps it dissolve perfectly with the warm matcha mixture. Adjust to your liking! Add Milk (and Ice!): For an iced latte, fill a glass with ice. Pour your whisked matcha mixture over the ice. Then, slowly pour in your cold milk. Watch that beautiful gradient form – it's so satisfying! For a hot latte, you can gently heat your milk on the stove or in the microwave until it's steamy, then add it to your matcha. The Star of the Show: Cold Foam! This is where it gets fun and adds that café-quality touch! In a separate small jar with a lid or a milk frother, combine your cold milk and optional sweetener for the foam. If using a jar, shake vigorously for about 30-60 seconds until it’s frothy and light. If using a handheld frother, froth until you get that desired airy texture. You want it to be thick enough to sit on top of your latte without immediately sinking. Assemble and Enjoy: Gently spoon your fluffy cold foam right on top of your matcha latte. You can even sprinkle a tiny bit of extra matcha powder for a pretty finish. And voilà! Your very own cafe-style matcha latte is ready to enjoy. It's surprisingly simple, right? I've found that getting the water temperature right for the matcha makes all the difference – too hot and it can taste bitter, too cold and it won't dissolve properly. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with different milks to find your perfect match. Making this at home has become such a lovely ritual for me, a little moment of peace in my day, and I hope it does for you too! Let me know if you try it! 🍵💚
