Financial Decisions I Have Made for my Dog

Echo is my everything and I am lucky enough to give her a very cushy life! I have a few things I’ve done to ensure her comfort and lifestyle don’t have to change even if my circumstance do:

1) She has her own emergency fund in a HYSA

2) She her own sinking fund budgeted into my monthly expense

3) She is written into a living will so that the above two funds will go towards her care if anything happens to me

I know that these are not reasonable things for everyone to do for their pet and I am very privileged to be able to do these for Echo.

... Read moreAs pet ownership comes with responsibilities, ensuring financial security for your dog is crucial. Establishing a high-yield savings account specifically for emergencies can help cover unexpected vet bills or other sudden expenses. Consider setting aside a sinking fund that caters specifically to your dog's recurring costs, such as food, treats, daycare, and regular vet visits. Many pet owners unknowingly overlook the importance of a living will that includes provisions for their pets. This establishes a clear plan for their care if anything were to happen to you, ensuring they continue to receive the love and support they deserve. Wealthy pet owners often look into setting up trusts, which can help manage funds in a more structured way for their furry companions. By prioritizing these financial strategies, pet owners can ensure they provide a consistent and quality life for their pets, regardless of changing personal circumstances. Being proactive not only demonstrates your commitment but also alleviates future worries about your pet's needs.

I have accounts for my cats. Savings for their major vet bills and a checking to help day to day stuff. It really helps separating everything for my personal stuff and other major bills.

You’re 100% my kind of person, people think I’m crazy with how above and beyond I go for my dog (and pets in general) but I’d do anything to make sure they’re thriving and set up. I’m not quite sure what a sinking fund is though, I’ll have to look into that now! If you don’t mind sharing, what do you do for work to make enough to continuously set money aside into accounts for her?
