saw a while back that the E.L.F hydrating core lip shine in Ecstatic (deep berry) was circulating online for being a good dupe to the Clinique Black Honey. I bought the E.L.F one first, and liked it, but after purchasing Clinique’s it is not the same! Ecstatic is a beautiful deep berry shade whereas Black Honey is more on the redder side. Black Honey does look more of a darker tone on some, but not on me.
I’d give Black Honey a 9/10, can be clumpy and is pricey but is a beautiful shade and has a lot of product. Ecstatic I’d give a 7/10, hydrating, pretty shade, nice price, but too dark for me! have any of you tried either? If so which do you prefer? :)
... Read moreOkay, so I've spilled the tea on whether E.L.F. Ecstatic is a dupe for Clinique Black Honey in my initial post, but honestly, there's so much more to talk about when it comes to these two popular lip products and the whole 'dupe culture'! I know a lot of you, like me, are constantly searching for that perfect budget-friendly alternative that can stand next to a high-end favorite. So, let's dive deeper into what makes each of these unique and explore some other options if you're still hunting for that Clinique Black Honey vibe.
After trying both extensively, I can confidently say that while E.L.F. Hydrating Core Lip Shine in Ecstatic is a fantastic product in its own right, it’s not an exact color dupe for Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. As I mentioned, the Clinique Black Honey gives off a sheer, buildable reddish-brown tint that adapts beautifully to individual lip tones, making it universally flattering. It's truly a "my lips but better" shade for many, offering a subtle hint of color and a lovely sheen without being heavy or sticky. The original article mentioned it can be a bit clumpy, but in my experience, a light hand helps, and it really does feel nourishing. For its price point of around $25, you're definitely investing in a classic.
Now, let's talk about the E.L.F. Ecstatic. This lip shine is a beautiful deep berry shade. It's incredibly hydrating, thanks to that core, and feels super comfortable on the lips. The pigment is noticeable but still has a lovely sheerness that makes it wearable for everyday. For just $7, it's an absolute steal for anyone looking for a gorgeous, plummy berry tint. My only personal caveat was that it was a bit too dark for my skin tone, but I know many people absolutely adore the intensity. The swatches I did really highlighted the difference – Clinique's unique reddish tone versus E.L.F.'s true berry, confirming they aren't interchangeable.
So, if E.L.F. Ecstatic isn't the Black Honey dupe you were hoping for, what else is out there? The search for the perfect Black Honey dupe is a journey many of us are on! I've seen some chatter about Maybelline SuperStay Vinyl Ink in Acai Glaze being another contender. While I haven't personally tried Acai Glaze yet, reviews suggest it offers a similar deep, rich berry-brown tone with a glossy finish, which could be closer to the "glossy" aspect some are looking for in a Clinique Black Honey gloss dupe. However, remember that "dupe" often means a similar vibe or effect rather than an exact shade match in different formulas.
Beyond direct dupes, consider other sheer, buildable lip products that offer a similar 'effortless chic' look. Brands like Burt's Bees, Physician's Formula, or even some K-beauty lip tints offer a range of berry or brownish-red hues that give that healthy, stained-lip effect. If you're into the hydrating core concept of E.L.F. Ecstatic, you might also enjoy their other lip products, like the E.L.F. Quartz Lip Oil or their Glow Reviver Lip Oils, which offer similar nourishment with a glossy finish, although the shades will vary.
Ultimately, finding your perfect lip product, whether it's an iconic staple like Clinique Black Honey or a fantastic budget find like E.L.F. Ecstatic (or another dupe entirely!), is all about personal preference and what works best for your unique lip tone and style. Don't be afraid to experiment, swatch them on your arm or lips in-store if possible, and embrace the shades that make you feel your best!
