Exercises to target the “side booty” 🍑
I’ve covered exercises on exercises to target the other parts of your Glutes like the lower booty and upper booty and now it’s time to target the Glute minimus/medius (more of the side of your glutes), so lets go!
Your glute medius/minimus is essentially responsible for balance and stabilizing the pelvis so think ANY balance single leg exercise will work this but here are my two favorites for this! 👇
#1 : Cable Kickbacks
Using a cable for this and properly doing glute kickbacks are a great way to work that muscle.
#2 : Bulgarian split squats
I do these with a dumbell, use a smith machine, body weight etc. These are amazing for strengthening imbalances and working that glute minimus/medius!

Hey fitness fam! You know that feeling when you're working out your glutes, but you feel like you're missing that outer, rounded look? I totally get it! For the longest time, I was doing all the big compound lifts, but my 'side booty' just wasn't popping. I learned that what we often call the 'side booty' is actually our amazing glute medius and minimus muscles. These aren't just for aesthetics; they're crucial for hip stability, balance, and preventing injuries, especially if you're into running or any single-leg exercises. I used to think any glute exercise would hit everything, but focusing specifically on these smaller, but mighty, muscles made a huge difference for me. My goal was to create that 'toned bum' look that really shows off from the side, and I finally cracked the code with targeted movements. Let's dive a bit deeper into those exercises mentioned. For Cable Kickbacks, it's not just about kicking your leg back. The magic happens when you really focus on squeezing your glute medius. Stand sideways to the cable machine, attach the ankle strap, and slightly lean forward. Instead of just pulling straight back, try kicking out at a slight angle, almost like you're pushing your heel out and slightly up, engaging that outer hip. Control the movement, don't just swing. I aim for higher reps, really feeling that burn and 'glute pump' by the end of each set. I sometimes do variations where I keep my leg slightly bent or perform side-to-side cable abductions to really isolate the muscle. The key is to stabilize your core and isolate the glute medius, making sure other muscles aren't taking over. Then there are Bulgarian Split Squats. Oh, how I used to dread these, but they are a game-changer! Since they are a single-leg exercise, they naturally force your glute medius to stabilize your pelvis. When I do these, I make sure my front foot is far enough forward that my knee doesn't go past my toes, and I really drive through my front heel to activate my glutes. You can hold dumbbells for added resistance, or even use a smith machine for stability if you're new to them. I focus on a deep descent, feeling that stretch in the glute of my front leg, and a powerful ascent, squeezing at the top. The beauty of Bulgarian split squats is how they highlight and help correct muscle imbalances, leading to a more symmetrical and 'fit ass' from all angles. Beyond these two, I've found other exercises incredibly helpful for creating that rounded 'booty from the side' look. Clamshells (with a resistance band above your knees) are fantastic for activating the glute medius as a warm-up or finisher. Standing Hip Abductions (again, with a band or on a machine) are direct isolators. Even Side Leg Raises (lying on your side) can be effective when performed with control. Remember, consistency is key! I try to include at least one or two glute medius-focused exercises in every leg or glute workout, ensuring progressive overload by gradually increasing weight, reps, or sets. It's all about building that mind-muscle connection. Really concentrate on the glute medius working during each rep. You'll not only achieve that aesthetic 'side booty' but also build a stronger, more stable foundation for all your other movements. Keep pushing, you'll see those results!

When I do kickbacks should I be squeezing my glutes? I feel it’s really hard to do with this exercise.
