Winter on the farm ❄️☃️

... Read moreWhen people picture 'winter on the farm,' they often imagine picturesque snowfalls and cozy evenings by the fire. And while that's certainly part of it, there's so much more to the reality of homesteading through the colder months! I wanted to share a deeper look into what my winter days are truly like here, beyond just the pretty snow. The biggest challenge, hands down, is keeping everything from freezing – especially water. Every morning, my first task is checking water troughs for the horses and any other animals, breaking ice, and ensuring they have access to fresh, unfrozen water. It's a constant battle, and I've learned to appreciate heated buckets and insulated hoses more than I ever thought possible! Preparing for winter means stocking up on extra feed, making sure barns are weather-tight, and having plenty of bedding ready to keep everyone warm and dry. Caring for our horses, like my sweet mare, during winter requires extra attention. They need more hay to stay warm from the inside out, often requiring double their usual amount. I also make sure their blankets are clean, dry, and properly fitted to protect them from the biting wind and snow. Mud can also be a huge issue, leading to hoof problems, so daily checks and keeping their turnout areas as dry as possible are crucial. It's a lot of extra work, but seeing them healthy and happy makes every effort worthwhile. We also have to be mindful of slippery ice in paddocks and make sure paths are sanded. Beyond animal care, general farm maintenance shifts dramatically. Snow removal becomes a daily chore, whether it's shoveling paths, clearing barn entrances, or making sure gates can open freely. The shorter daylight hours mean I'm often starting chores before sunrise and finishing up after dark, relying on headlamps and barn lights. It really makes you appreciate those long summer days! Even simple tasks like gathering firewood take on a new intensity when the cold sets in. However, it's not all hard work. There's a unique beauty to a farm blanketed in snow – the quiet stillness, the crisp air, and the way the winter light plays on the frosty branches. There are moments of pure magic, like watching the horses gallop through fresh powder, or sipping a hot drink after a morning of chores, looking out at the serene landscape. It’s a time for reflection, for slowing down (even if the chores don't!), and for appreciating the resilience of nature and our animals. The cozy evenings after a day of hard work feel earned and deeply satisfying. Winter on the farm teaches you patience, adaptability, and a deep connection to the land and its rhythms. It's challenging, yes, but incredibly rewarding, fostering a sense of accomplishment and a profound appreciation for the simple, fundamental aspects of life. Every season brings its own set of blessings and demands, and winter truly highlights the heart of homesteading and the unbreakable spirit of those who live it.
