October 6, 1976 is one of the darkest days of Thai political history - the day when blood of students and citizens poured on the courtyard of Thammasat University, Tha Moon, simply because they came out demanding "democracy" and against the "military dictatorship" that returned to power shortly after the events of October 14, 1973.

The event began as a wave of resistance to the reinstatement of Marshal Cherished Kitti, a former authoritarian prime minister who had been ousted after the uprisings. Many students and citizens saw that the return was a sign of the revival of the power of the military dictatorship group. They then came out to rally at Thammasat University to demand an end to authoritarian authority and for the country to return to true democracy.

But a few days later, far-right groups and some media outlets misrepresented the rally as "defamatory," creating a wave of hatred for students that became the beam of hatred in Thai society.

Numerous police officers, soldiers and right-wing masses stormed the rally, used real weapons of war, strafed, slaughtered, and viciously arrested college students; images of student bodies hanged, beaten, inhumanely assaulted are still embedded in eyewitness memory to this day.

At least 46 people were killed (according to official records), but many parties believe the actual figure may be much higher. Hundreds of college students were arrested, many of whom had to take refuge in the forest, becoming part of the struggle against the Thai state in a later era.

Although more than 40 years have passed, the "truth" of October 6 has never been fully recorded in Thai lessons.

Many Thai children only know that "there was an incident in which students were dispersed at a rally," but no one explains "why Thais killed Thais together."

Removing or distorting history becomes part of "untouched" culture because states and authority do not want citizens to question power, or learn from past mistakes.

🧩 What does the October 6 incident reflect in Thai society?

Deep-rooted authoritarianism - Thai society is taught to obey rather than question, allowing those in power to use violence unchecked.

Media and Distortion - Rumors and media illusions of that era were the fuel of hatred, which continues to be repeated in modern times, only from newspapers to social media.

Memories - Thailand chooses to remember some things and forget some things because "truth" may not like authority.

🔥 It's time to accept the "truth" so it doesn't repeat.

Not talking about October 6 doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Not teaching, not recording, not accepting, not healing wounds, but making the younger generation unaware of what this country has lost for democracy.

Justice never materialized in that incident.

No authority has been seriously prosecuted.

No one's sorry. No one's responsible.

October 6 is not just an event of the past, but a "lesson" that reminds us that when power transcends authenticity, when people are brainwashed by fear and hatred, humanity is easily destroyed.
