A war that may not be just about the border.
The war that may not be just a border affair: Who is moving Mak in the ASEAN shadow?
by aekdon
As the clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border resumed, many saw this as an old conflict, looped by history, wounds and nationalist emotions.
But in the international political world, no event is "floating" without the context of power.
The important question is not just who shot first.
But who benefits if this conflict erupts?
Layer one: What can be seen with the eyes
Thai-Cambodian border tensions are real, and have been repeated many times.
Cambodia has strong ties to powers outside the region, especially China.
The United States, under the Donald Trump-esque "America First" concept, values the extraction of Chinese influence in Southeast Asia.
ASEAN is at a fragile stage; unity is challenged by conflicts of interest.
All these are "structural facts" that no one can deny.
Second Layer: Questions No One Has Yet Answered Directly
If Cambodia becomes a new strategic point in the superpower game, who will benefit?
Do border tensions help "pull Thailand" into a defensive state or lose focus on the world stage?
Why does Cambodia have a labor-mercenary warrior-foreign influence influx at some stage?
Who provides money, weapons, or training - systematically - if not the big states?
These questions are not allegations, they are what global societies should ask.
The Third Layer: Hypothetical Theory in the Big Board
In geopolitical perspective,
The US needs a "China counterbalance area" near sea routes and the global logistics network.
China needs stability of the Belt & Road and influence in the Gulf of Thailand-South China Sea.
Cambodia may become a "middle of the board" with short-term benefits, but risk long-term sovereignty.
ASEAN was tested as a peace arena or a backdrop for the great powers to play games instead.
If some ASEAN leaders or mechanisms are "lent a hand" to driving pressure, that is certainly not new in world history.
Fourth floor: Who are the pawns?
In every war - whether hot or cold.
Pawns never led the country.
But is
People along the border
Lower level soldiers
Local economy
Relations between the people and the people
And finally, the "truth" is drowned out by nationalism.
A conclusion to think about.
The world is not divided into good-villains like Hollywood movies.
But full of overlapping interests.
Whenever society is rushed to hate before questioning,
Then our chances of becoming a pawn are immediately higher.
Sometimes wars don't start with guns.
But maybe it starts with us stopping to think for ourselves.
The war never started with little people.
But always end up in the blood of a little person.
On the power board, only players and mak
And people... are often placed as pawns without ever making their own choices.
