... Read moreDei V's 'Underwater' concert was an absolute dream to photograph, especially as it was my first time capturing the magic at El Choli in Puerto Rico! I've always been passionate about live music photography, and getting this opportunity felt incredible. The energy in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico was electric, and Dei V's performance truly brought the 'Underwater' theme to life. Before the show, I spent a lot of time preparing. Concert photography isn't just about showing up with a camera; it requires careful planning. I packed my most reliable camera body, a fast prime lens (like a 50mm f/1.8) for low-light conditions, and a versatile zoom lens (like a 24-70mm f/2.8) to capture both wide shots of the stage and close-ups of Dei V. Extra batteries and memory cards were, of course, essential – you never want to miss a shot because of a dead battery! I also researched the venue's photography policy, which is crucial for any event photographer. Knowing if there were restrictions on flash or lens sizes helped me set expectations and plan my approach. Once inside El Choli, the atmosphere was buzzing. The stage production for the 'Underwater' theme was spectacular, with blue and green lighting washing over the audience and intricate visual projections that mimicked ocean currents and aquatic life. This kind of dynamic lighting can be a challenge for photographers, but it also offers incredible creative opportunities. My strategy was to keep my ISO high (often around 3200-6400) to compensate for the low light, while maintaining a fast shutter speed (1/250th of a second or faster) to freeze Dei V's movements on stage. I tried to anticipate key moments – a powerful vocal, a dramatic pose, or an interaction with the crowd – to capture the raw emotion of the performance. One of the biggest lessons I learned shooting at El Choli for the first time was navigating the crowd and finding unique vantage points. It's easy to get stuck in one spot, but moving around (when possible and respectful) allowed me to capture different perspectives of the stage and the enthusiastic audience. I focused on telling a story with my photos, not just documenting the event. This meant looking for details: the sweat on Dei V's brow, the intricate designs on the stage, or the pure joy on a fan's face. The 'Underwater' theme wasn't just visual; it felt immersive, and I wanted my photos to reflect that depth. For anyone aspiring to photograph concerts, here are a few tips from my experience: Shoot in RAW: This gives you much more flexibility in post-processing, especially when dealing with challenging concert lighting. You can recover details in shadows and highlights more effectively. Master Manual Mode: Auto settings just won't cut it in such dynamic lighting. Learn to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed on the fly. Anticipate Moments: Watch the artist's movements and expressions. Often, the best shots come from anticipating a peak moment. Protect Your Gear: Concerts can be crowded and energetic. Keep your camera secure and be mindful of your surroundings. Focus on Emotion: Technical perfection is great, but a photo that captures genuine emotion is truly powerful. This whole experience was a reminder of why I love photography. It's not just about clicking a button; it's about being present, adapting to challenges, and freezing moments in time that tell a story. Getting to do it for Dei V's 'Underwater' concert in my beloved Puerto Rico was simply unforgettable. If you have a passion, chase it – you never know what amazing experiences await!
