Home Is Where The Bodies Are ✨Book Review

Home is Where The Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose was an easy, quick read, but it lacked the gripping suspense I was hoping for. The plot was predictable, making it more of a casual mystery than a thrilling page-turner. If you’re looking for something light and easy to follow, this might be for you—but don’t expect major twists. ⭐⭐⭐½/5”

I’ve read a couple of Jeneva Rose books and in my opinion, they are just average. But I will say her book covers are absolutely beautiful and unique. I love that this one looks like a VHS tape.

What did you think of the book? Is it on your list to read?

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk about something I really loved about 'Home Is Where The Bodies Are' – that incredible cover! When I first saw it, designed like a retro VHS tape, complete with a TV screen aesthetic and a quote from Lisa Jewell, I was instantly hooked. It’s so unique and visually striking, truly setting it apart on the bookshelf. The way the spine even mimics the edge of a VHS tape is such a clever detail, and the inner flap looking like a broken screen just adds to the whole nostalgic, mysterious vibe. It makes you feel like you're about to pop in an old horror movie, setting up a certain expectation for the thriller within. It's genuinely one of the most creative book covers I've seen in a while, and it definitely caught my eye, making me want to pick it up immediately. Speaking of expectations, let's dive a bit deeper into Jeneva Rose's writing. I've read a couple of her books now, and while they're always an easy read, I kind of go into them knowing what to expect. She has a way of crafting mysteries that are straightforward and flow well, which can be great if you're looking for something light and quick to finish. However, if you're like me and crave those mind-bending twists and turns that keep you up all night, you might find some of her narratives, including 'Home Is Where The Bodies Are,' a little too neatly tied up. The plot, for me, felt predictable after a certain point, lessening the 'thriller' impact. It's not a bad thing, just a particular style. Her strength often lies in her character dynamics and setting up intriguing domestic situations, even if the 'whodunit' aspect doesn't always deliver a huge shock. For those wondering about an 'age rating' or suitable audience for 'Home Is Where The Bodies Are,' I'd say it's generally appropriate for young adults and adults. While it falls into the psychological thriller genre, it doesn't delve into overly graphic or disturbing content that would make it unsuitable for a broader audience. There aren't explicit scenes of violence or gore, and the themes of murder and mystery are handled with more psychological intrigue than visceral horror. It's a milder entry into the thriller world, making it a good starting point for those new to the genre or who prefer less intense reads. Think more 'cozy mystery with a psychological edge' rather than 'dark and gritty true crime.' If you're searching for psychological thrillers that really mess with your head and deliver those unexpected gut punches, or if you picked up this book hoping for more major twists, here are a few recommendations that have truly gripped me. For unreliable narration and a truly shocking ending, 'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides is a masterpiece. If you love dark psychological depth and complex characters, Gillian Flynn's 'Gone Girl' is a must-read. And for a classic locked-room mystery setup with plenty of suspense and surprises, 'The Guest List' by Lucy Fokley always delivers. These authors really know how to subvert expectations and deliver those jaw-dropping moments that make a thriller unforgettable. While 'Home Is Where The Bodies Are' is a decent read, especially for its unique packaging and easy pace, if you're after that intense, unpredictable journey, these other titles might scratch that itch more effectively, offering a deeper dive into the genre's thrilling potential.

I read this no one ever really talks about it. It was good and it was very predictable, but I loved it and the reason I got it was because of the cover.
