The Mad Made of Smoke by Alex North was not at all what I expected — in fact, I felt a little uneasy when I realized the premise centers again around young boys being kidnapped (which, frankly, makes my skin crawl), I’ve now read two Alex North books (The Whisper Man) with this same disturbing theme, and while it definitely pushes my comfort zone, I can’t deny though how well he writes. His prose is immersive and haunting in the best way and kept me turning pages even when I wanted to look away. The unsettling subject matter might not be for everyone, but purely for the storytelling and atmospheric writing, I’m giving this one a solid 4 stars.
