I could feel she didn’t like me

Have you ever felt disliked by a family member, even if they were “nice” to everyone else?

That was me with my aunt- I was convinced she absolutely hated me it wasn’t that she was outright rude it was the energy and tone and honestly everyone could just tell she didn’t like me.

Kids can feel things adults pretend aren’t there.

Every time I tried to talk to my mom about it she literally just didn’t care. Idk I always try and think in my head why she didn’t do anything and I honestly feel like it’s why I have a hard time with my mom too cause it made it feel like my instincts didn’t matter.

Like the way I experienced things was somehow wrong.

I understand it is her sister but I am also her child.

Now my mom doesn’t talk to me at all but she still is close with her sister who really made me feel small as a child so I think it’s all very telling. It confirms the ideas I had in my head as a child that she just didn’t care enough to say anything.

I think she doing me a favor by not talking to me anymore.

How did you handle family members who obviously didnt like you ?

... Read moreFamily dynamics can be complicated, especially when one senses rejection from close relatives such as an aunt. Feeling disliked by a family member, even when they are outwardly polite to others, creates a deep emotional conflict. Children are often sensitive to subtle cues—the energy, tone, and behavior—that indicate someone’s true feelings, even if adults dismiss or minimize these perceptions. This kind of emotional invalidation can affect not only the relationship with the disliked relative but also impact one’s bond with other family members, like a parent. It is important to acknowledge that feeling rejected or unloved by family can cause lasting emotional pain. Growing up in an environment where your instincts and feelings are disregarded may lead to difficulties trusting and connecting with others later in life. However, understanding these feelings is the first step toward healing. One effective approach to handling family members who exhibit dislike or coldness is setting clear emotional boundaries. It’s essential to protect your mental well-being by limiting interactions with those who make you feel small or unwanted. Choosing to prioritize your self-worth and emotional health can help reduce hurt and build resilience. Communication is also critical. If possible, calmly addressing your feelings with the family member or a supportive relative might clarify misunderstandings or provide closure. In situations where communication is not constructive, seeking support outside the family—through friends, counselors, or support groups—can be beneficial. Moreover, fostering self-compassion and reminding yourself that the rejection says more about the other person’s limitations than your value is key. Recognizing that a parent’s decision to maintain a close relationship with a relative who hurt you can be painful, but focusing on your own growth and healing can empower you to move forward. Ultimately, handling family members who dislike you involves balancing acceptance of the situation with active steps to protect and nurture your emotional health. Engaging in communities or forums that encourage vulnerability and shared stories, such as #GirlTalk, can provide comfort and guidance. By embracing vulnerability and seeking genuine connections, you can rebuild trust in relationships and create a supportive environment for yourself.
