My Mom Hates Me (or at least, that’s how it feels)

She didn’t congratulate me on my wedding. She pretends she doesn’t see my posts, but I know she does.

And honestly this is normal in my family. For generations, the women have had broken relationships with their daughters. Whether it’s insecurity, jealousy, or a mix of both, it’s a cycle I’ve seen repeat over and over.

On my wedding day, I thought I didn’t care that she wasn’t there. I told myself it is what it is. But then my little sister messaged me saying “congrats” and suddenly I felt sad—because deep down, I wish my mom and I would’ve atleast been able to talk so fhat way my little sister could’ve been a part of it. I wish I had that kind of mom who could celebrate me or atleast say congratulations without it turning into drama.

But I also knew if I reached out, it would’ve only brought chaos to a day that was meant to be beautiful. So I chose peace to protect my heart and to have a great time celebrating with people who genuinely care about me and were excited for my husband and I.

And I know one thing for sure- this cycle stops with me and my sisters. We will not carry it forward. My sister is a great mom to her daughters(and son) and I hope we all are like that.

... Read moreStrained mother-daughter relationships, especially those involving feelings of insecurity or jealousy, can profoundly impact important life events such as weddings. This emotional distance often stems from deep-rooted family patterns passed down through generations. Understanding that these dynamics are common in some families helps contextualize feelings of rejection when a mother does not acknowledge her daughter's milestone moments. Choosing peace over drama is a vital step in protecting one’s emotional wellbeing. On a day meant for celebration, such as a wedding, prioritizing relationships with those who show genuine care can restore joy and create lasting happy memories. Choosing peace also signals a powerful break from the cycle of familial conflict, ensuring that toxic patterns are not passed on to the next generation. By consciously deciding to end the cycle of broken bonds, daughters can foster healthier family environments for their own children. Positive parenting and open communication within the new generation help combat the feelings of jealousy and insecurity that often underlie fractured relationships. Encouraging open dialogue and emotional vulnerability within families can promote healing and stronger bonds. For those navigating complex family relationships during significant life events, seeking support from trusted friends, therapists, or support groups can provide essential emotional relief and guidance. Addressing mommy issues openly helps individuals recover lost self-esteem and build loving, supportive relationships. Breaking free from generational cycles requires courage and self-compassion, but it also offers hope for healthier family dynamics. With awareness and commitment, future generations can embrace love, celebration, and emotional connection without the shadow of unresolved past conflicts.
