Have you ever blocked a family member?
After our Orlando trip, my mom stopped talking to us and seeing her pop up on my Facebook like everything was normal started messing with my head. So I blocked her on Facebook and I restricted her on Instagram too.
constantly seeing someone who chose to stop talking to me but I would see on social media was extremely weird lol it was giving highschool fallout with a friend not mom and daughter.
Have you ever had to block a family member for your mental health?
When family relationships become strained, especially after conflicts during significant events like vacations, handling social interactions on social media can be incredibly challenging. Blocking a family member or restricting their access on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram is a strategy many people use to protect their mental health. It’s not about creating permanent barriers but about setting boundaries to avoid ongoing emotional distress. Seeing posts or interactions from someone who has chosen not to communicate can feel unsettling and disrupt your emotional well-being. This experience, as expressed, can feel similar to falling out with a friend during adolescence rather than the expected closeness with a parent or child. In cases where a relative engages in covert negative behavior, such as sneaky disses or passive-aggressive comments, blocking becomes a necessary tool to maintain personal peace. Mental health experts acknowledge that social media interactions, especially with close family, can impact self-esteem and anxiety levels. Therefore, setting digital boundaries by blocking or restricting can serve as a healthy mechanism to reduce stress and improve mental resilience. The use of platform-specific features like 'restrict' on Instagram allows one to limit what the person can see or comment without fully severing ties, providing a nuanced approach to maintaining some connection while safeguarding mental health. It's essential to understand that such actions are not signs of weakness or hostility but of self-care. They facilitate emotional distance while one processes conflicts or waits for situations to improve. Community discussions and hashtags like #toxic and #family show that many grapple with these issues, and sharing stories helps in destigmatizing this form of boundary-setting. In summary, blocking or restricting family members on social media may be a necessary step toward recovering from relational strain and protecting mental health. It encourages healing by reducing exposure to negativity and allowing space for emotional recovery, which benefits long-term family dynamics and personal well-being.

I’ve had my bio-mom blocked for years. She doesn’t even know about my 3rd child 😂
