Any advice for starting a new job?
I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve been new at a workplace. I worked my last job for almost 4 years! I started working a new job in a field I have NO experience in. So far everyone has been really nice and helpful but I still just feel so embarrassed, nervous, shy everything like that lol. How do you get over nervousness in the workplace ?
Starting a new job, especially in a completely new field, can feel overwhelming at first. I remember stepping into an unfamiliar workplace and feeling a flood of nerves and self-doubt. One thing that truly helped was reframing those initial feelings of embarrassment and nervousness as natural signs of growth. Everyone was once new and uncertain, so giving yourself permission to make mistakes opens the door to learning and improvement. Another helpful approach is setting small goals each day. For example, aim to learn one new thing about your role or company culture daily. This practice not only builds competence but also shifts your focus from worries to accomplishments, boosting confidence over time. Building connections with your new coworkers can ease anxiety significantly. From my experience, simply asking questions or showing genuine interest in others’ work helped me feel more included and supported. Most people appreciate friendly conversations, and such interactions build a sense of community. Additionally, preparing before work can reduce nervousness. Reviewing company materials or job descriptions can clarify expectations and reduce surprises. At the same time, practicing mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing before starting your day, can calm your mind and improve focus. Remember that nervousness is temporary—the more you expose yourself to the new environment, the more comfortable and competent you will become. Embrace the learning curve, and don’t hesitate to seek advice or mentorship when needed. Over time, the shy and nervous feelings will transform into confidence and excitement as you grow in your new role.
