My secret is a good quality butter and brown sugar. Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat, then sprinkle in the brown sugar until it dissolves. Lay your banana slices in a single layer and let them cook undisturbed for about 2-3 minutes per side until they're beautifully golden and sticky. That rich, sweet crust is what makes these caramelized banana bread bars truly special! And let's talk about the dulce de leche drizzle! It's such a game-changer. If you're short on time, a good quality store-bought dulce de leche works perfectly. But if you're feeling adventurous, you can easily make your own by slowly simmering a can of sweetened condensed milk in a water bath for a few hours. Just make sure the can is completely submerged! The result is this incredibly rich, creamy caramel that pairs so well with the bananas. I love swirling it right into the banana bread batter and spooning extra over the warm bars when they come out of the oven. The combination of the caramelized sweetness and the creamy dulce de leche is just heavenly. For the banana bread itself, using really overripe bananas (the ones with plenty of brown spots!) is key for that intense banana flavor and moisture. Don't be afraid to mash them well.
