We deserve more than the bare minimum

2025/3/20 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, let's be real. That moment you're staring at a 'bare minimum text message' and a tiny voice screams, 'What unhealed part of me was attracted to this?' — I've been there, more times than I care to admit. It’s a gut punch, right? It’s that uncomfortable realization that you, a person deserving of so much, somehow found yourself settling for less. For years, I found myself in situations, whether in friendships or even dating, where I was consistently 'asking for the bare minimum' without even realizing it. I’d accept vague plans, last-minute invites, or conversations that felt one-sided, all while telling myself, 'Well, at least they tried.' But deep down, there was this gnawing feeling that I was worth more. This journey of self-discovery led me to confront those 'unhealed parts of me.' I started digging into why I felt compelled to accept crumb-like efforts. Was it a fear of being alone? A belief that I wasn't good enough for more? Past experiences that taught me to expect less? For me, it was a mix of a few things: a tendency to people-please and a subconscious fear of rejection. It’s like these unhealed wounds were unconsciously attracting situations where I wouldn't have to fully put myself out there, thus 'protecting' me from potential hurt, but also keeping me from true connection. Recognizing these patterns was the first, and arguably the hardest, step. I began journaling, asking myself tough questions: 'What does 'deserving more' actually look like for me?' 'What are my non-negotiables?' 'Why do I feel uncomfortable asking for them?' It wasn't about being demanding, but about respecting my own emotional bandwidth and time. Then came the practical part: actually raising my standards and communicating them. This meant saying 'no' to things that didn't excite me, setting clear boundaries, and being okay with the discomfort that sometimes comes with standing firm. For instance, if someone kept sending me 'bare minimum text messages' that left me feeling confused or undervalued, I learned to either address it directly ('Hey, sometimes those messages leave me wondering where we stand. Can we be clearer?') or, if it was a recurring pattern, to distance myself. It's a continuous process, not a one-time fix. There are still moments where I catch myself slipping into old habits, but now I have the tools to pull myself back. Understanding 'what unhealed part of me was attracted to this' isn't about self-blame; it's about self-awareness and empowerment. It's about healing those parts so you can genuinely attract and accept the love, respect, and effort you truly deserve. You are worthy of so much more than the bare minimum – never forget that.

You should never have to convince someone to treat you right, communicate clearly, or show up with effort. The bare minimum isn’t a prize — it’s the starting line. You deserve reciprocity, peace, and connection that doesn’t require reminders. 💭 If this hits home, it’s time to raise your standard

Dads don’t need credit for doing the bare minimum
Something I feel has been going on for decades is the way society views and applauds moms and dads. Moms are often seen as the go to parent, the one who’s supposed to be doing it all no matter what! I wish we celebrated mothers whether they’re doing the bare minimum or going above the expectation!

This image compares Public and Private student loans. Public loans are from the US Dept. of Education, require FAFSA, and may defer payments. Private loans are from lenders, require credit checks/cosigners, have higher rates, and may require in-school payments.
This image differentiates Public Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans. Subsidized loans have lower, fixed interest, with the government paying interest while in school. Unsubsidized loans are similar but the government does not cover accruing interest during school.

Not gonna lie… I used to confuse the bare minimum with real effort. Not because it was enough — but because I’d never been given more. A “good morning” text felt like love. Hanging out once a week felt like commitment. Him finally calling me back felt like “trying.” But that wasn’t effort.

I once dated someone who thought that staying loyal was all it took to be a good partner. But boy, was he wrong. Loyalty is important, sure, but it’s not the only thing that matters in a relationship. You can’t treat someone poorly and then expect them to be grateful just because you didn’t cheat.
