can’t teach a papagens how to do small tasks

2024/12/11 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so if you've spent any time in VRChat, especially within the furry community, you've probably encountered a 'papagen.' For those scratching their heads, it's our affectionate (and sometimes exasperated) term for someone who just... struggles with the most basic tasks. I swear, it's like trying to teach a computer how to do basic tasks from scratch, and it's not always pretty! My latest adventure involved a new friend who just couldn't grasp the concept of opening a door. I kid you not, I spent a good five minutes trying to explain, 'Push the button! No, not the keyhole button under the handle, the actual big, glowing button!' They were literally just pushing down on it with their hand, wondering why nothing was happening. I was almost tearing my hair out, thinking, 'Now what? Open the f$&king door!' It feels so intuitive to us seasoned VRChat users, but for them, it's a whole new world of interaction. I've had countless moments like this. Trying to get someone to teleport to a specific spot, follow a simple quest objective, or even just activate an avatar's expression menu. It's genuinely hilarious sometimes, but also incredibly frustrating when you're trying to move a group forward. I've learned that a lot of it comes down to being completely new to VR, or perhaps not understanding VRChat's somewhat unique control schemes. Some papagens are just kids trying to figure things out, while others might be adults new to gaming in general. So, how do I deal with it? Patience, mostly. And a lot of visual cues. Instead of just saying 'Press that in,' I'll try to physically point my avatar's finger at the exact spot, or even use a drawing tool if the world allows. Breaking down complex actions into tiny, digestible steps helps too. For example, 'First, raise your hand. Then, point your finger. Now, move your hand forward until it touches the button.' It sounds ridiculous, but sometimes that level of detail is exactly what's needed. It's also a good reminder to be empathetic. We all started somewhere, right? I remember my own clumsy first steps in VRChat, bumping into everything and struggling with locomotion. While 'papagen' is a fun term, it's important to remember there's a person behind that avatar trying their best. So next time you're trying to guide someone through what seems like the simplest task, take a deep breath, channel your inner teacher, and maybe have a good laugh about it later. Who knows, one day that papagen might be teaching someone else how to open the f$&king door!
