Alaska Windstorm

That windstorm yesterday was something else, wasn't it? When those 50 mph gusts started howling, I knew we were in for a bumpy ride. It's one thing to hear about high winds, but to feel your whole house shudder and watch the trees outside doing a frantic dance is another story. And then, just like clockwork, the power went out. Being plunged into darkness at 20 degrees Fahrenheit isn't ideal, especially when you're trying to figure out dinner! It really makes you appreciate electricity, even for simple things like a warm cup of tea. For those of us living in Alaska, enduring a windstorm with no electricity is almost a rite of passage. We've learned to be prepared. My go-to strategy involves having a good supply of candles, a battery-powered lantern, and a hefty stack of blankets. Keeping a small, emergency supply of non-perishable food is also key, and I always make sure my phone is fully charged if a storm is predicted. We even have a designated 'cold weather' cupboard for certain foods that need to stay cool, which works perfectly when the fridge goes out. It's all about making the best of it, sometimes even turning it into a cozy, albeit chilly, family game night. A common question I hear, especially from folks outside the state, is 'Are there tornadoes in Alaska?' It’s a valid question given how wild our weather can get, but generally, no. Tornadoes are incredibly rare here, almost non-existent. Our cold climate and mountainous terrain just aren't conducive to the supercell thunderstorms that spawn tornadoes elsewhere. What we do get frequently are powerful windstorms like the one we just had, blizzards, ice storms, and intense coastal storms. These bring their own challenges, from massive snowfalls to widespread power outages and treacherous driving conditions. So while you might not see a funnel cloud in Alaska, you'll definitely experience nature flexing its muscles in other spectacular (and sometimes inconvenient!) ways. This recent storm really highlighted the resilience of our community. Everyone helps each other out, whether it's checking on neighbors or sharing resources. It just goes to show that even when Mother Nature throws her worst at us, we Alaskans know how to hunker down, stay warm, and eventually, laugh it off.
