Do you like annotating or tabbing your books? It’s something I’m trying when reading and figuring out which way I like best. So far I prefer to use one or two colors that best match the book. And I purchased clear sticky notes for underlining certain text or quotes. #tabbingbooks #annotatingbooks

... Read moreIt's so fun to see how everyone approaches tabbing and annotating their books! I'm still figuring out my perfect system, but I've learned a lot along the way that I wanted to share. If you've ever wondered how to tab books or create your own book annotation tabs key, here are some tips based on my personal experience. First, why even annotate? For me, it's all about engagement. It helps me remember details, track character arcs, and easily find my favorite quotes later. Plus, it just makes the reading experience feel more personal and interactive. When I'm reading a really immersive story, like a fantasy novel where characters like Isadore might use 'magick' or discuss the 'throne,' I find myself wanting to mark those key moments, world-building details, or shifts in power dynamics. How I Tab Books: Developing Your System There's no single right way to tab, but here's what I've found works for me. I usually pick one or two colors that complement the book's cover or theme. This makes my annotated books look aesthetically pleasing, which is a big plus! But beyond aesthetics, a good tabbing system needs a 'key.' Think about what you want to mark. Do you want to easily find profound quotes, interesting vocabulary, character development points, or plot twists? Here are a few ideas for a book annotation tabs key: Yellow/Orange: For quotes that resonate with me or beautiful prose. Blue/Green: For important world-building details, especially in fantasy books discussing things like 'Sorceryn' or cultures like 'Myreans.' Pink/Purple: For character insights, emotional moments, or relationships. Red: For plot twists, foreshadowing, or moments of conflict. Clear Sticky Notes: These are my secret weapon! I use them for underlining text directly in the book without actually marking the page. I can write a quick note on the sticky note itself, like a question mark if I'm confused or an exclamation point if something is surprising. For example, if I read a passage where a 'Queen' is struggling or a character makes a difficult choice, I might underline it with a clear note and write a quick thought about their motivation. I find having a consistent color code helps me quickly scan my book later to revisit what I'm looking for. You don't have to use all these colors, though! Start with just two or three categories that are most important to you. Tips for Getting Started with Annotation Flags: Don't Overthink It: The first few times you try, it might feel a bit clunky. That's okay! Just start by marking whatever catches your eye. Personalize Your Key: Your annotation system should work for *you*. If you're reading a mystery, you might want a color for clues. If it's romance, maybe one for swoon-worthy moments. Experiment with Supplies: Beyond colored tabs, consider what pens or highlighters you like. I prefer fine-liner pens for notes on my clear sticky notes. Embrace the Journey: Like finding your favorite book, finding your favorite annotation method is a process. My system evolves with every book I read, and that's the beauty of it. I hope my little journey into book tabbing and annotation gives you some ideas for your own reading adventures. Happy reading and happy annotating!
