This journey…
hammered into shape by pain,
mapped in the quiet ink of hard-won wisdom,
carried on the back of a strength
I did not know my bones possessed.
I walk it alone
or so it appears
to those who measure company
by footsteps beside them.
But I am not alone.
I walk with Spirit
breath within breath,
pulse beneath pulse,
nearer than the echo of my own name,
nearer than the longing for lover or child.
Where hands cannot reach,
where voices cannot follow,
there— Spirit walks me home.
This poem beautifully captures the essence of a deeply personal and spiritual journey through hardship and healing. Speaking from my own experience, I find that such journeys often reveal strengths we never knew we had, much like the author's mention of strength carried within our bones. When facing pain or trials alone, it sometimes feels as if we are truly isolated. However, many people, including myself, have found comfort in the idea of an unseen companion—whether it’s called Spirit, God, or simply an inner voice—that walks with us, offering support beyond the physical realm. In my experience, embracing spirituality during difficult times can be profoundly healing. It shifts the focus from loneliness to a sense of sacred companionship. The metaphor of Spirit walking 'breath within breath' and 'nearer than the echo of my own name' resonates deeply; it suggests an intimacy and presence that goes beyond human connection. Many find that this relationship nurtures resilience, enabling them to face pain not just with endurance but with peace. Additionally, healing is often described as a gradual process, mapped out in the 'quiet ink of hard-won wisdom.' This reminds me that trauma and hardship carve new depths within us that can transform into insight and strength over time. It’s important to honor that process and recognize that while we may appear to walk alone on the outside, inside we are supported by our spirit and faith. For anyone navigating such a spiritual journey, I encourage embracing the sacred solitude it entails while seeking connection through prayer, meditation, or simply listening to your inner voice. Such practices may help to reveal the comforting presence that the author beautifully illustrates. Ultimately, walking with Spirit is about trusting that even in isolation, you are deeply connected to something greater, leading you home.
