“She Carries the Ruin Like a Crown”

They told her survival was silence.
That to be strong was to stay small—
to swallow every sharp thing
and call it "character."
But she bled in sentences.
She blistered in metaphors.
And her mouth was a chapel
where unspeakable things
learned to sing.
She is not graceful.
She is not easy to love.
She walks like a memory that bites.
Her hands have calluses from holding
every version of herself
she was once buried alive.
There is no meekness in her divinity.
She does not kneel.
She plants her grief like a stake in the earth
and dares the storm to bloom.
You will not find her in the light—
she is the match.
The smoke.
The spark in the scream
that says:
"I lived."

In a world where silence is often mistaken for strength, Alessandra G. Di’Stefano's poem, 'She Carries the Ruin Like a Crown,' resonates deeply. It challenges the conventional notion of what it means to be strong, particularly for women navigating their own battles. The imagery of blood in sentences and blistering metaphors illustrates the agony and beauty interwoven in the experience of trauma and survival. The poem embodies the spirit of those who refuse to be subdued by pain and instead use it as a catalyst for growth. It signifies a rebirth through words, asserting that true strength lies not in silence but in the loud declaration of existence. Every stanza explores the dichotomies of vulnerability and power, revealing that one's scars can serve as a testament to resilience. This piece encourages readers to take ownership of their narratives, embracing every facet of their identity—even the parts that hurt. The metaphorical 'match' and 'spark' symbolize the fierceness one can possess amid chaos, aligning with the empowering message to rise and not merely survive. Overall, 'She Carries the Ruin Like a Crown' is a compelling reminder that embracing one's voice is an act of defiance, beauty, and authenticity—a narrative worth sharing in a society eager to silence those who speak their truth.
