Where the Flame Learns to Dance

Alessandra Graziella Di'Stefano

She rises from the wick of her own endurance

not smoke, not ash, but something braver.

A body remembered by light.

A spine taught early how to arch toward hope

even when the night pressed close,

even when the forest held its breath.

The candle does not consume her.

It recognizes her.

Its small sun cups the ache she carries

and says: you are allowed to lift yourself from this.

So she does

one foot pointed toward silence,

one arm curved like a question she no longer fears asking.

Around her, the dark loosens its grip.

Stars lean in.

Violets open their throats.

The air learns a new language

a grammar made of surrender and resolve.

She dances not to be seen

but because stillness would betray her pulse.

There are scars folded into her movement.

You can feel them if you look long enough

the way her balance wavers before it steadies,

the way grace arrives late

and stays anyway.

She has burned before.

She knows how heat teaches.

This is not escape.

This is transmutation.

The moment when pain remembers

it was once light.

The moment a woman becomes the proof

that what tries to end us

can become the very thing that lifts us.

“I did not survive the fire to be quiet I survived to glow.”

She holds herself aloft

on breath alone,

on faith sharpened into muscle,

on the quiet agreement between flame and soul

that neither will waste the other.

Some women don’t burn out

they rise, and teach the darkness how to watch.

This piece reframes survival not as endurance,

but as elevation

where the wound becomes the wick,

and the self chooses to dance

instead of disappear.

The metaphor of the flame as both a source of pain and a symbol of strength resonated deeply with my own experiences overcoming challenges. Like the poem's imagery, I've learned that true survival isn’t merely about enduring hardships but about transforming the scars and wounds into sources of light and growth. In my life, periods of hardship felt like being enveloped in darkness. Yet, when I embraced vulnerability and allowed myself to heal, I found a new language of surrender and resolve emerge within me—much like the poem's reference to a "grammar made of surrender and resolve." It’s in these moments of quiet perseverance that we connect with our inner flame, teaching us that pain can be transmuted into grace and strength. The poem’s vivid depiction of dancing with scars and the delicate balance of movement is a beautiful reminder that healing is not linear nor perfect—sometimes grace arrives late but stays with us nonetheless. This aligns with my personal journey of recovery, where patience and self-compassion have been essential companions. The idea that "what tries to end us can become the very thing that lifts us" captures the essence of how adversity can fuel purpose and illuminate our path forward. For anyone navigating their own fire, this poem serves as a tribute to resilience and empowerment. It encourages us to rise unapologetically, teaching the darkness to watch while we glow. Reflecting on these themes, I find renewed inspiration to honor my strength and trust the quiet agreement between my soul and the flame within.
