82 【Idiom Story】Ignorant Arrogance
The idiom "Ignorant Arrogance" later came to describe those who are short-sighted and arrogantly self-important
The idiom 'Ignorant Arrogance' originated from a tale about a small kingdom called Yelang, nestled amid beautiful mountains and rivers. The king, proud of his realm, believed it was the largest and most splendid. One day, a messenger from the Han Dynasty visited Yelang, presenting gifts and sharing tales of the vastness and prosperity of the Han Dynasty. The king, however, dismissed these claims, convinced of his kingdom's superiority. Undeterred, the envoy described the incredible expanse and richness of Han, yet the king remained skeptical, viewing it as mere boasting. Upon the envoy's return, he recounted the king's arrogance to the Han emperor, who simply smiled, choosing to remain silent. Eventually, as the Han army mobilized against a neighbor, they passed through Yelang, where the king witnessed this vast force. Finally confronted with the reality of his kingdom's insignificance, he understood the folly of his ignorance and arrogance. This story serves as a potent reminder of how arrogant self-importance can blind individuals to the bigger picture, a sentiment still relevant in many societies today.
