career advice u SHOULDN’T listen to (+replacement)

Regardless of who has told you this advice—your parents, your ex-boss, social media—you simply should NOT listen!

"Go the extra mile at work and the people above you will notice it!"

What actually happens is that you set: 1) expectations that you’ll take on even more work, 2) work extra hours, 3) and it'll lead to burnout. And the worst part is that the people above you won’t even reward you for it 😖

To be clear, I do think it’s important to work hard at strategic moments in your career if you want to move up. BUT I also think it’s important to 1) prioritize your boundaries for the sake of your own mental health and 2) call attention to your accomplishments yourself.

Because no one is just going to see and reward you if you don’t advocate for yourself.

So here’s what I would replace this advice with:

✨Do good work and then strategically socialize and amplify the good work you’ve been doing. ✨

Many professionals receive the well-meaning but misleading suggestion to 'go the extra mile.' This advice often implies that increased effort will yield recognition and rewards from higher-ups. However, the truth is that consistently overextending oneself can lead to burnout and decreased job satisfaction. Instead of putting in extra hours without reward, consider leveraging your successes for visibility. Communicating your achievements to your superiors, through regular updates or performance reviews, positions you as proactive and engaged. Building a network within your workplace can also amplify your efforts. For instance, invite colleagues to share in your successes during team meetings or collaborative projects, ensuring your contributions are acknowledged. Additionally, setting clear boundaries is vital for maintaining mental well-being. Be strategic about when to put in extra effort; focus on high-impact projects and avoid taking on additional work unless it's strategic for your career growth. Remember that prioritizing your mental health and advocating for yourself not only benefits you but also enriches the workplace culture, fostering a more supportive environment for everyone. In conclusion, embrace a holistic approach to career advancement that balances hard work with self-promotion and boundary-setting. This way, you can navigate your career path effectively while minimizing stress and enhancing job satisfaction.
