Bedrooms 2 and 3 were combined to create a spacious communal living area with a kitchen island, long dining table, fluted TV wall, custom carpentry, soft lighting, warm wood tones, neutral finishes, and family-focused spaces for gathering, daily living, and shared meals.
Based on my experience living in a 4-room HDB flat that underwent a similar renovation, the decision to hack walls and open up the living spaces completely changed how we use our home. Combining bedrooms to create a 'dumbbell layout' brings the kitchen, dining, and living area together, making the entire space feel more connected and inviting. The addition of a kitchen island not only anchors the room but serves as a versatile spot for casual meals, meal prep, or catching up with family. One thing I found crucial in this kind of open layout is balancing openness with defined zones. Using design elements like a fluted TV wall or custom carpentry allowed the space to have character without feeling fragmented. Soft lighting was essential to create a warm, cozy atmosphere, especially for family dinners around the long dining table, where guests can linger comfortably. This approach works well for growing families or those who entertain frequently. It truly creates a home designed for gathering, slowing down, and enjoying everyday moments together. The neutral finishes and warm wood tones contribute to a timeless aesthetic that supports various decorating styles over the years. Incorporating multifunctional spaces also adds value—whether for quiet work or play areas for children nearby, or room for visiting parents and relatives. Overall, hacking walls in a 4-room HDB BTO to create an open-concept communal heart offers a better way to live, blending functionality with intentional design that meets modern family needs.
