Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is easily one of my favorite science-fiction reads about humanity encountering the unknown.
Without giving anything away, the story follows a man who wakes up alone in space with no memory of who he is or why he’s there… only to slowly realize that the fate of Earth might depend on him figuring it out.
What I loved most about this book is how it approaches first contact. Instead of chaos, hostility, or destruction, the story leans into science, problem-solving, curiosity, and the kind of collaboration you’d hope humanity is capable of when faced with the unknown.
If humanity ever does experience a true first contact moment… I’d honestly hope it looks something like this.
