I finally made it to Dunaway Books in St. Louis and I am NOT okay 😭📚

nearly 80,000 books across three floors! used, rare, out of print, history, philosophy, sci-fi, mystery, poetry, Black history, first editions… there is even a piano you can play and vinyl for the music lovers. this place has everything.

walked out with an illustrated copy of Human Story a history of humanity from the dawn of time and my beloved Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy because some books demand a reread 🖤

if you’re in STL this is a non negotiable stop. South Grand. go.

... Read moreVisiting Dunaway Books felt like stepping into a bibliophile’s paradise. With its maze-like layout spanning three floors, this bookstore is truly a hidden gem for collectors and casual readers alike. I was amazed by the diverse categories offered—from Black history and literary criticism to science fiction and poetry—which cater to every reader’s taste. One thing that stood out was the welcoming atmosphere; despite the vast collection, the staff were friendly and eager to help locate rare finds. I enjoyed wandering through the basement area, packed with mystery novels and science fiction, which made me realize how rare it is to find an indie bookstore with such a curated selection. The addition of a piano and vinyl records for music enthusiasts adds a unique charm, making the store not just a place to buy books but also a cultural experience. Holding my new illustrated copy of 'Human Story,' tracing humanity from its dawn, and grabbing a beloved reread of 'The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy' felt like the perfect haul. For anyone in St. Louis, especially on South Grand, Dunaway Books is non-negotiable for a bookstore tour. Whether you're hunting for out-of-print treasures, local history, or simply want to spend hours surrounded by books, this place offers an immersive literary escape. Don’t forget to check their website or call ahead to learn about special events or signed copies available. Trust me, once you step inside, you’ll understand why this indie bookstore is such a beloved spot among STL’s literary community.
