A Retwist After 2 Months

2024/4/8 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! So, I just had my locs retwisted after two months, and they're feeling so fresh and clean! But if you're like me, with dyed locs, you know it's a whole different ball game when it comes to maintenance. It's not just about getting a retwist; it's about making sure your color stays vibrant and your locs stay healthy, especially after the chemical process of dyeing. I've learned a few things along my journey with dyed dreads, and I wanted to share some tips that have really helped me keep my hair in top shape. The biggest concern for many with dyed locs is dryness and potential breakage, so hydration is absolutely key! I make sure to moisturize my locs daily, sometimes twice a day, using a light leave-in conditioner or a diluted rosewater spray. After that, I'll seal in the moisture with a natural oil like jojoba or argan oil, focusing on the lengths and ends, which tend to get drier. When it comes to washing, I try to strike a balance. Over-washing can strip color and moisture, but not washing enough can lead to buildup and dullness. I typically wash my locs every 2-3 weeks, using a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. I gently massage my scalp and squeeze the shampoo through my locs, making sure not to agitate them too much. After shampoo, a good conditioner is vital. I look for deep conditioning treatments specifically designed for color-treated hair and let it sit for a good 10-15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. I find that this really helps to restore moisture and keep my color from fading too quickly. Another tip for maintaining vibrant dyed locs is to protect them from environmental stressors. The sun can really bleach out your color, so if I'm going to be outside for an extended period, I'll often wear a hat or cover my locs with a light scarf. Chlorine in swimming pools is also a big no-no for dyed hair – it can turn your beautiful color into a brassy mess! If I do swim, I make sure to wet my locs with clean water first, which helps them absorb less chlorine, and then wash them soon after. During a retwist, it's super important to communicate with your loctician, especially if you have dyed hair. I always ask for a gentle retwist, ensuring they don't pull too tightly, which can cause tension and stress on my already chemically-treated hair. Over-tightening can lead to thinning and breakage, which is the last thing anyone wants. Between retwists, I avoid re-twisting my roots myself too much, as this can also cause damage. I let them grow out naturally until my next appointment. Finally, a good nighttime routine is non-negotiable. I always sleep with a silk or satin bonnet or headscarf. This reduces friction, which can lead to frizz and breakage, and helps to retain moisture in my locs. It's a small step that makes a huge difference in keeping my dyed dreads looking neat and feeling healthy. Taking care of dyed locs requires a bit more effort, but seeing that rich color and healthy shine makes it all worth it!
