People are changing their profile pics to purple to show support for the movement in South Africa against gender based violence. The group leading this is called Women For Change. They are trying to raise awareness because the situation is really bad. A lot of these women are not just killed. They are raped, tortured and used before they are murdered.
The purple pics are part of a bigger plan leading up to the national shutdown on November 21. On that day people are stopping work and doing a 15 minute standstill at 12.p.m to honour the 15 women who are killed every single day.
The goal is to push the government and the leaders at the G20 to finally treat this like the emergency it is and actually take action.
And honestly, even here in America we have way too many women being raped and hurt too. I'm not saying that to take away from what's happening in South Africa. It's just a reminder that this is a global problem, and supporting them matters because no woman anywhere should have to live like this.
