For years, I frequented tanning beds, thinking that having a tan was essential to looking healthy and fitting in. However, over time, the changes became apparent, and I started to feel that my appearance looked abnormal to others, which added to my insecurities. Looking back, it is important to recognize that tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) rays which can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and other issues. But beyond health concerns, many people who engage in tanning also face emotional and social pressure related to their skin color—whether pale or dark. In my case, the bullying I experienced for being pale made me want to tan more, hoping to avoid negativity. Three years ago, I decided to stop tanning altogether and embrace my natural skin tone. This journey led me to accept and love myself authentically. Not everyone can or should resort to changing their skin color to feel accepted. Our natural skin color is beautiful in all shades, and it is vital to prioritize self-acceptance over societal standards. If you are considering tanning or struggling with your skin tone, remember that many share similar stories of pressure and transformation. It's helpful to connect with communities that support embracing natural beauty and promote skin health. Finding confidence in your authentic self is the best glow anyone can have. As I continue my natural lifestyle, I encourage others to consider the long-term effects and emotional impact of tanning. Celebrating your uniqueness is empowering, and learning to live comfortably in your skin is a valuable life lesson that goes beyond skin color.
