Games I come back to
Here are the games I come back to to play over and over again. All very different but exactly what I need. My comfort games! I use switch versions and PC versions of all 3 of these - buy on switch or steam. Stardew is the most chill, don’t starve is the most addicting, and Skyrim is great to explore. They all itch different parts of my brain.
If you're like me and find yourself constantly drawn back to games with a deep sense of survival, crafting, and exploration, then you probably understand the magnetic pull of Don't Starve. What makes it so addicting? For me, it's that perfect blend of resource management, the constant threat of the unknown, and the uniquely unsettling art style that keeps me on my toes. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about mastering the wilderness, one strange creature and bizarre recipe at a time! While my article highlights Stardew Valley and Skyrim as my other go-to comfort games, I know some of you might be looking for titles that lean even closer to Don't Starve's specific blend of challenging survival. Stardew certainly offers resource gathering and crafting, but with a much cozier, less stressful vibe. You're building a farm, not fighting for your life against tentacle monsters! Skyrim, on the other hand, excels in open-world exploration and discovery, much like the vast, procedurally generated worlds of Don't Starve, but with a strong RPG narrative rather than pure survival mechanics. So, if you're craving more of that 'Don't Starve' feeling, here are a few other games I've personally enjoyed that scratch a similar itch. First up, Terraria. Don't let its 2D pixel art fool you; this game is a crafting and exploration powerhouse. You dig, build, fight bosses, and manage resources in a world that constantly evolves. It has that same sense of progression and discovery, where every new material unlocks a dozen new possibilities, just like learning the secrets of the Constant in Don't Starve. And yes, you can definitely play this on your Nintendo Switch! Another fantastic option is Subnautica. This one takes the survival genre to a whole new level by plunging you into an alien ocean. The resource gathering, base building, and constant threat of deep-sea creatures really evoke the same tension and strategic thinking as Don't Starve. It's less about hunger and more about oxygen and pressure, but the feeling of overcoming a hostile environment through crafting and exploration is incredibly similar. It's an immersive experience that begs you to discover what lies beneath. Lastly, if you enjoy the pure, unforgiving survival aspect, I'd highly recommend The Long Dark. This game strips away the fantasy elements for a stark, realistic survival experience in the Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. It’s all about managing warmth, hunger, thirst, and fatigue while exploring a beautiful but deadly environment. It lacks the whimsical brutality of Don't Starve, but the core loop of scavenging, crafting, and trying to live another day is incredibly strong and equally addicting. No matter which one you try, the joy of these games comes from overcoming challenges, crafting your way to success, and making a hostile world feel a little more like home. Happy gaming!

How is don’t starve? I’ve been wanting to play it but just haven’t made that buy yet.
